In the opening of the show, there is a frame that shows a painting similar to Michaelangelo's painting of Adam and God, except Light is reaching out to touch the Shimigami instead of Adam reaching out to touch God like in Michaelangelo's paining. This is drawing a parrallel between Light and Adam. Also the apple shows up a lot in the opening sequence. The apple represents knowledge to discern between good and evil. More specifically, it represents the ability to properly judge what is good and what is evil. Like Adam, Light is given the ability to judge with the Death Note, but also like Adam he is way too immature for that ability.
L is the person who comes to correct Light's mistake. Unlike Light, L is mature and can discern good and evil. He knows that Light's deeds of killing criminals are evil, even though they appear to be just to some people. L is obviously a christ figure. Episode 25 makes the parallel absolutely undeniable because he washes the feet of the person who will betray him.
That's all I'll share, but this should make the show more interesting in the case that someone hasn't caught these parallels.

The shinigami Ryuk also has a craving for apples. Light often barters information from Ryuk in exchange for apples.
Chocolate and sweets are common in the show as well, although I don't know what would be significant about that.
